FINAL Project - Faulty Memory

We attempt to understand everything around us, gathering all the clues available to conjure an explanation for the things we see and put meaning behind the things we experience. The human mind will do anything to fill blank spaces. False memories patch up hazy recollections, imaginary fears haunt the darkness, and dreams fill the empty void of sleep.

For my final project, I wanted to create a series of works under the idea of Humans' "Faulty Memory" using skills learned from Photoshop, Illustrator, and the Laser Cutter.

Process:

Using Photoshop, I edited pre-existing photographs from my childhood.

I was particularly focused on distortion of the forms and figures in my photographs and using colors to convey feelings of nostalgia or create "dreamscapes".

Using Illustrator, I created forms that represented the idea of "neural networks" for the laser cutter.

I made sure to choose forms that would allow for alot of negative space so that once they were cut with the laser cutter, the holes would allow a lot of the photogrpah to be revealed.

My photoshop images were printed at the MML.

My illustrator files were cut onto watercolor paper at the BDW.

Using glue, cardboard, and a precision knife, I compiled all of the photogrpahs for display.

Since alot of the photogrpah would be covered up by the design of the laser cut watercolor paper, I decided to leave it detatched and allow veiwers to interact with the work and raise the paper flap to be able to see the photogrpah by itself.

Faulty Memory is a series of 12 interactive mixed-media works.
