Process:
Kant argues that color cannot make artwork beautiful. He believes that the use of color only provides charm, therefore suggesting that color cannot be used as a primary medium in a creation. My effort to prove Kant wrong has produced "Keeny Quad".
I have always considered Keeny Quad as a very dull and uninteresting place on campus. Rarely do I veiw it as a place of beauty. My focus was to be able to portray Keeny Quad as a beautiful, lively place with the use of color.
This is Keeny Quad on a normal afternoon:
To be able to convert Keeny Quad into a place full of color, I used the colors of the herbarium (the most colorful place I know on campus) to form a color palette.
I used the Eyedropper Tool to form a color refrence across the top:
I used the image of Keeny Quad and the color palette to create a recreation of the photograph with abstract colors.
I used the Polygonal Lasso Tool and Brush Tool to create several layers of shapes:
As a final touch, I adjusted the Hue/Saturation of different layers to create a color palette that worked more cohesively.
The new colors of the artwork can be compared to the initial color palette I used at the top of the page:
Since I created this work using the RGB color mode, I duplicated the file and transformed the color mode to CMYK.
I decided to readjust the Hue/Saturation of different layers to chnage this version because the colors from the RGB color mode did not look the same in the CMYK color mode:
This is what the print looks like:
I had some fun experimenting with different hue/saturation settings:
Seems like color can be used as the primary medium of an artwork.
